BBC radio show BBC radio sitcom radio sitcomA genius, master of disguise and toffee-nosed ponce, as Doctor Watson describes him, Sherlock Holmes sets out to face new adversaries in this new casebook. The cases he will tackle is slightly different from what he got used to - carnivorous plants, shady deals in the entertainment circles in the Victorian era, plots to harm the queen herself, or a secret society of shoemakers. He can always count on the help from Doctor Watson and sometimes from Mrs Hudson, not to mention the Doctor Moriarty input to keep Sherlock busy.
The Newly Discovered Casebook of Sherlock Holmes was a parody of the adventures of the famous detective, not the first one, most likely not even the last one, but in a way it was a unique experience. The risqué jokes, painful puns, breaking the fourth wall, sometimes even musical numbers were quite surprising in such production. To be fair, not every single bit of it landed, but at least it was something completely different.
Another aspect of the show, apart from the scripts that were usually quite entertaining, was the cast. Roy Hudd played the Sherlock Holmes, Chris Emmett played Doctor Watson, June Whitfield was Mrs Hudson - if you know their previous works, you know what to expect. Geoffrey Whitehead and Jeffrey Holland filled the smaller parts (like Lestrade and Moriarty).
The Newly Discovered Casebook of Sherlock Holmes was not a show for everyone’s taste, especially the musical numbers were a bit but old-fashioned (although thus aligned with the atmosphere). But if you like to hear some surreal or risqué jokes in the middle of Victoria Era, this could be a show for you.
