It’s a Fair Cop (2014-2021, United Kingdom)

Original title: Alfie Moore - It’s a Fair Cop

BBC radio show stand-up radio show BBC radio stand-up show

Alfie Moore was a police officer in Scunthorpe, in northern part of England, for 20 years, before he chose to become a stand-up comedian. It’s a Fair Cop is his original interactive show, in which he invites the audience to become police officers for a day (well, for half of an hour anyway) and try to deal with the dilemmas cops have to face every single day. In each episode he presents a different situation or an event he was part of during his years as an active police officer (at least we can assume so) and asks the audience what would they do if put in such situation.

And the scenarios Alfie Moore picked to present is from a wide range of every-day problems - from the disputes between neighbours to drunk drivers, from stalking to suspicious death or street protests. And in each of them he tests not only how the public would behave, but also how well they know the laws that apply. In some cases it could seem quite obvious what the police should do using "common sense" and usually it turns out the laws of the United Kingdom do not follow the common sense.

It’s a Fair Cop is an unusual mixture of stand-up comedy, interaction with the audience plus, in a small part, a mockumentary about modern day life. Each episode is both entertaining and often makes you think, not only what you would do as the police officer in such situation, but also, is this the best thing that should be happening in our society. And Alfie Moore with great skill navigates between the two worlds - the law and the funny side of it.
